Inside the Majolica Suite: tiles from Vietri sul Mare

When we restored the house, the room that is now the Majolica Suite had lost its old floor. We asked a family workshop in Vietri sul Mare, the coast's ceramic town, to make new tiles the old way: red clay, a tin glaze, and blue-and-white patterns painted by hand, one tile at a time.

What to look for

  • No two tiles are quite the same — you can see the brush in every one.
  • The pattern behind the bed is a traditional Vietri design; the green tiles in the bathroom are glazed in the copper green of the old local ware.
  • Ask us for the workshop's address: it is a short drive and they will show you the kilns.

The suite sleeps three, with a canopy bed, a sofa bed and a Juliet balcony over the pergola.
