Why the lemons here are different

The sfusato amalfitano, the chestnut pergolas it grows on, and what we make from our own grove.

Why the lemons here are different

The lemons in our garden are sfusato amalfitano: long, pointed, thick-skinned and sweet enough to eat in slices with a little sugar. They have grown on these terraces for centuries, trained over pergolas of chestnut poles that shade the fruit from the August sun.

What we do with them

  • Breakfast: lemon cake, still warm, and fresh juice from the grove.
  • Our house limoncello, steeped from the peel each winter and poured, ice-cold, after dinner.
  • Granita on the pool deck in July.

When to come

The trees flower and fruit at the same time, so there is scent and colour almost all year — but May, when the blossom is out and the first big crop is picked, is the month the garden is at its best. Guests in the Lemon Garden Apartment are welcome to pick their own.
